DC’s COMMENTS - A YEAR OF CELEBRATION…..
A Happy New Year to you all.
After much publicity etc we have arrived at this special year to celebrate 100 years since BP introduced the Scout Movement. From small beginnings we now have 28 million members world wide, 500,000 in the UK. Along with our sisters Girl Guiding UK; It is the biggest youth movement and it continues to provide a valuable youth service and I am proud to be part of it.
I know that everyone of our youngsters will have the chance to participate and enjoy the birthday experience through the various programme and activities planned for this year.
|
|
Every member of the District should have or about to receive a commemorative scarf and shirt badge presented on behalf of the District Executive. Hopefully each will bear four participation badges by the end of the year.
It will be nice to see all our members wearing the first of the four centenary badges on the centenary scarf or on their uniform.

This must be a year to remember, for you and for our members. I would like to think that memories will be revived when Scouting celebrates 150 years, as I remember as a young scout attending the 50th celebrations on a day visit to the Jamboree at Sutton Park
I finally fitted the uniform when I was sixteen and I wore the shorts and belt until I was 30’ish, but alas they shrunk somewhat!!
The next main celebration event will be Alton Towers on Sunday 22nd April. Latest estimates are that there will be 7 to 8 thousand attending. You may be of the view that it is not your scene, quite understand that, however please ensure that your youngster do have the opportunity to go with their Parents, family members and friends etc. It will be a great day out and I am sure one to remember. If you want to see me on the day I will be in the café!

PUBLICITY IN 2007
We are seeking to make good NEWS during 2007. To do this can everyone please work through Duncan Davies, who will be our Media Manager for 2007 His contact details are: Email: duncan_davis341@hotmail.com.
Duncan will have a master Press Release format, to ensure we have a professional look to our releases. It is hoped to have this on our website, so you can download it from there.
Please ensure that you have the permission of your youngster’s parents for release of images with names. It is recommended that for general photo’s names are not published. Certainly do not use an address.
We have 5 young spokespersons that are to front publicity within our District with the media, clubs and local government. The young persons are to receive training in this skill from TV/radio/press professionals, so they are well prepared.
In addition two of our Jamboree Contingent members have been trained in the skill sets as a Spokesperson, so we should be well placed to put across our message.
What better way to put over Scouting than by the youngsters themselves?
2007 – DISPLAY TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS
We are looking at venues and memorabilia to bring to the public our local involvement and history.
We are looking to Matlock and Ashbourne as venues. Anyone interested enough or knows of someone to take this project on board?

3rd Matlock (Lea & Holloway) are 13 years old after restarting the Group in March 1994.
5th Matlock (All Saints) celebrate 82 years in February.
6th Matlock are 61 years old this June
15th Matlock will have clocked up 55 years this April

So we have a great deal to celebrate and to be proud of the contribution you have made to many youngsters’ lives

Furry Fred Challenge projects are well on the way, with Colonies planning the County Bonanza at Drum Hill in June. |
Fact – Beavers are involved in 2007 celebrations
Fact – Beavers can qualify for the four celebration badges
Fact – Beavers can wear the Centenary badge
Just be flexible and ensure our Beavers have FUN.
Beavers started early for Christmas with parties. The DC popped into the 5th and the 15th and both were well into games and a feast being prepared. At the peril of upsetting Mrs Mel, the DC declined to try out the savouries.

Phil and Carol, Beaver Leaders at the 6th Matlock (Darley Dale) have been encouraging their Beavers to think of other through the programme. This concluded with an open evening showing the plight of children in India, who often are reduced to begging at the expense of education at a very early age.
Phil and Carol have become involved with an organisation who takes in children, clean, feed and clothing them and begin their education, with the aim to take them out of poverty.
The Colony and the Group have raised money to provide stationary items (vary scarce in India) and they have purchased parachute for the children to have fun.
They visited the Shanti Niketan School as well as similar schools in the area of Assagoa.

DC threatened
During December the DC was tipped off that he was to be nobbled to ensure he did not win the 6th Matlock (Darley Dale) Ten Pin Bowl evening again.
This was a very enjoyable evening for 20 of us. There are some very good bowlers in the Pack too. It was interesting that 75% of the lanes were being used by different Cub Packs, good image or what.
Two Cubscouts were presented with prizes for the best 'Pirate' colouring competition. Wendy (alias Akela) nearly won as she had slipped her entry into the pile. God job the judges picked hers as best or they would have been in trouble.
The evening finished with a slap up supper of fish slices, chips and beans. What more would a Cub want?
Oh and the DC won again!!
DISTRICT CUB SCOUT QUIZ
This popular evening will be held on the 8th February 2007, 6.45 for 7.00pm start. The venue will be the 15th Matlock Green HQ’s. - Rules etc have been sent out to Cub Scout Leaders.

All units are doing well and we are anticipating at least 2 Queen Scouts Awards and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards will be completed soon. This is in addition to several Bronze and Silver D of E’s, Platinum and Diamond Awards having been earned by member of Leopard ES Unit.
This Unit has now in excess of 35 members. Well done the leadership team. It goes to show that a good balanced programme meets the needs of the youngsters.
DISTRICT SWIMMING GALA
Yet another brilliant event, well organised and attended, only one Group did not send a team; even the Explorers were all represented.

Scouts Receive Awards in the 100th Year of the Scout Movement
At a County Scout Presentation held at Ashbourne Town Hall on Sunday 4th February. Two District Explorer Scouts received their Queen Scout Award.
The Awards were presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, John Bather on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and the President of Derbyshire Scout Council Sir Richard Fitzgerald

Sam and Tom, both of the Leopard Explorer Scout Unit, based in Lea & Holloway received their Queen Scout Awards.
The Queen Scout Award is the highest Training Award of all sections and is equivalent to the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Their achievements over a period of two years included having camped for over 18 nights as an Explorer Scout, projects in international, environment and life values activities. Involve themselves in; a new physical and practical skill, service to the community and complete a four day and three night expedition in open or adventurous country by foot and present a review.
Sam and Tom will be attending, along with 12 other Queen Scouts from Derbyshire, the National Queen Scout Service in April at Windsor Castle.
Scouting offers challenge and adventure to 400,000 young people and 100,000 adults across the UK in helping our Members fulfill their potential by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves. We give people of every background the chance to stretch themselves, learn new skills and make life long friends.
This year Scouting celebrates 100 years since Robert Baden-Powell started the Scout Movement by holding a camp on Brownsea Island on the 1st August 1907. The District will be having various events, camps and activities to celebrate our achievements throughout the year.
NEXT ISSUE
The next issue is due out in April. Items for inclusion should be in by end of March. Please do send your news and share it with the other Leaders.
