TISSINGTON WELL DRESSING

Tissington has the earliest known tradition of well-dressing, the purity of water wells kept
the village from the black death (1348-1349)and also saved them from the terrible drought
in the 17th century.

Each year during May our District is responsible for arranging the car parking for this event
and fee collection. The car parking fees, after paying the costs of hiring the field and other
costs, the remaining money are distributed to the participating voluntary groups based on
the hours they have put in.

Pauline has for many years organised the rota, signs and administered the proceeds and
distribution to various charities of which we benefit as well.
Over 35,000 people visit the event each year. Good PR for scouting as well.

Thanks to those who help on manning the car park and particularly to Pauline, Alan,
John and Rosie, who are keeping this Derbyshire tradition alive.

Tissington is an estate village and for more than 400 years Lords of Manor, the Fitzherbert's, have taken considerable interest and active role in the well dressings. This is maintained to the present day by Sir Richard Fitzherbert.

The well-dressing pictures are made by pressing flower petals, ferns, lichen, bark, seeds and greenery into damp clay which is held in a wooden frame.
